why would you put a cast crank in a dart build?

that's pretty cheap for a dart based short block. besides the crank im wondering how much time they spent on assembly and the balance.

right now im in my boss 351 block build

$700 for the block
$620 for the scat steel crank
$520 for the molnar H beams
$630 for the racetec 2618s, rings and pins
$1000 to the machine shop for machine work and balance so far. and probably another 500-1000 for assembly, bearings ect as they charge $100 and hour, but they actually mic everything and mock it up as many times as needed to get everything right.

I can understand that, somewhat.
Why would the Dart short block come with a cast crank?
Isn't it coming straight from Dart?

Thanks Jim, I understand that now.
If the Dart cast crank is a good piece, then I wouldn't worry about it as much. Is it?
The price seems fair...

Again, trying to convince yourself it is going to be good enough and trying to save money. Buying from someone who didn't do the work themselves, how are they suppose to know what has been done and meet the spec of your application or mating parts?
If you need this assembly now, only have so much money, and will just make it work...than go ahead, take the best deal based on displacement and type of materials used.

guess that depends on how it's built.
Totally agree, but just give basic comparison in most peoples decision making when using factory 'XXX' block. Some of these stock camshaft or small displacement SBF can really turn some heads.

Ok I get it. No cast cranks. I'll only buy a forged crank.

So now the other option is from AD Performance. I read on this forum where that is a good shop. Did I read wrong? Should I stay away from them too?
Please answer honestly, I'm trying to learn about strokers...

They have a Dart block, forged crank, forged rods and forged pistons. $3999
AD Performance Sportsman Dominator 347 Shortblock [ADP347Sportsman] - $3,999.00 : AD Performance, Your Source for Longblock Performance Parts

I've emailed them asking how long it takes to get one.
Thanks again for all of the info.

I have purchased parts from Brian before and have been pleased with what I received. He's been around a while for what that is worth . I have not purchased one of his assembled short or long blocks though.

If you can't wait for Woody....

Have you talked to Mark about having one built?

What about CNC Motorsports?
Which Mark? I'll gladly talk to anyone :)

Guys, I'm not trying to stir the pot here. I'm learning valuable info, I appreciate the time you take to respond. My questions and remarks may come out brash but they are intended to be. Thank you.

With more projects than the current one, time is important.
Of course, money is a huge concern. I can also do this in stages. This year get the Dart short block with forged internals. Then just use my existing TFS TW 170 heads ,get a custom cam and run it until I can get better heads and better cam next year. It won't be optimum, but, I saw on Woody's street 347 engine where he uses 170 heads on a 347. It can't be all That bad.

I haven't checked out CNC Motorsports but I will.

I just did a quick scan through CNC 347 shortblocks, they have Eagle cranks.
I was under the impression they aren't that great.. Of course I could be wrong again :-[

Sorry, got to get off the computer and get busy. To much to do today.
Talk at you later.

I have purchased from both Mark O'neal and Brian. (both great peeps) Can't say anything bad about the crank in my 347. It's lasted two engine builds, 550+RWHP, and about 50k HARD miles. Best part, its cast! :)
