Hello fellow Corral members, my name is Don and ive been on Corral since 1996 but became a member in 2009.
I thought it was about time to make a build thread about my beloved 1986 Mustang Coupe that I've owned for 32yrs.
It was my first car I bought when I was 16 in 1990. I'm almost 48 now in a few months and I love it still as much as I did when I was 16.

Now for some history on my love for Ford's and especially my love for Mustangs. Ford trucks is all my Grandfather's and my dad would drive. Both my grandfather's were farmers and totally depended on those trucks daily for heavy abuse. My dad was a John Deere master diesel tech for 40yrs and only drove Ford trucks. He was a field tech which ment he had to go repair farm equipment that was broken down in the field. Seen his F150 4×4's come home muddy as hell a many a day from having to go out in the middle of a muddy field to repair a tractor or cotton picker.

My love of Mustangs started around 6-7yrs old. My moms brother, uncle Jimmy, had a Wimbledon White 1970 Boss 302! We lived next door to my grandparents since we lived on a huge farm and on every Sunday after church he came by in that Boss 302. I vividly remember staring at those Boss 302 hockey stripes at eye level then..lol. But it was the rides he would take us on that are truly seared into my brain till death. I remember seeing that Sun Tach hit 7500rpm on every powershift he performed thru that T handle Hurst shifter. Watching that shaker hood scoope rock back and forth when he would punch it was awsome. It was a rare Dragpak Boss with oil cooler and 4.30 geared Detroit Locker 9in. It was destroyed in a crash but he saved the block and was given to me before his death, more on the block later.

Now around 12-13, I started subscribing to every Mustang or Ford magazine there was. Even Hot Rod and Popular Hot Rodding. Couldn't get enough of classic Mustangs and a 1970 fastback is what I REALLY wanted for my first car. But hopes and dreams became gloom and doom real soon. See, this was 1989 and the 60's-70's muscle car market was starting to explode. I had saved up $2500 over 3yrs working all kinds of odd jobs, mostly on the farm or for other farmers,I could drive and disk land with a big ass John Deere tractor at 13rs old. So me and my dad went looking for a 70 fastback, for an entire year we went and looked at basket cases for my $2500 budget. My dad would NOT let me drag home what he called straight junk in his eyes. It needed to be a driver, not a restoration project. My hope for a Mustang to be my first car was looking slim to none. But that all changed soon.....

I landed a job as a painters helper at a local Chevy dealerships body shop in 1990, a few months before I turned 16. The painter I worked for his name is Scott, real good painter and taught me a ton about painting cars. I was his helper and he paid me to sand and tape up warranty paint jobs. I sanded a lot of damn peeling Chevy Corsica's and Beretta's..lol. Scott was the original owner of a bright red 1986 5.0 coupe. He bought it new right out the Navy in 86. One day he came into work needing to borrow $2000 for a family emergency situation and no one was willing to help him out, even the dealership. So I offered him the $2000 for the Mustang...at first he was hesitant because he really didn't want to sell the mustang since he bought it new. But a couple hours later with title in hand,it was mine.. this is 2 days after I bought it...

It was originally an AOD 3.27 geared 5.0 coupe. I drove it daily for the next 13yrs and all thru high school I only did 4.10 gears, MAC equal length headers, off road H-pipe and Flowmaster catback. With a 2800rpm converter and TransGo shift kit it would run 13.50'[email protected] consistently on street tires.

Then in 1996 I did my first real makeover on the car. I pulled the engine, trans and rear all at once. The stock shortblock was replaced with a 90 model HO roller that I freshend up and topped off with a custom grind Lunati roller cam, Canfield heads and 93 Cobra intake. 24lb injectors, 73mm C&L meter, 190lph pump and 65mm TB round out the fuel and air. The intake and heads were ported by a friend of mines dad that worked in the engine shop at Robert Yates Racing at the time. The AOD was replaced with a T5 from a wrecked 10k mile 93 Cobra and the 8.8 rear got a Auburn Pro diff,4.10 gears, Moser axles, and T/A girdle. The suspension got Jamex Drag springs, 90-10 Competition Engineering struts and 50-50 rear shocks, Southside Machine upper and lowers. Then I added some sweet new shoes by the way of Weld Racing Draglights 15x3 and 15x9 rims. Now it was time to assault the drag strip!!

With the above setup and combo it ran 11.80'[email protected] on 26x10 slicks, 7.50'[email protected] in the eighth. In 99 I added a single stage NX Race Nitrous kit adjustable from 75-250, never ran it at the track with the gas but ran it on the street grudge racing a ton. I'm positive it would have ran high 10's easy by the way it pulled and the high 10 second big block chevys I out ran on the street..lol. A few pics of my little sister beside it and my nephew.

Then I bought myself a new 07 GT and went modular racing for awhile and the 86 coupe took a 12yr hibernation nap...

I sold the 3v GT in 2013 and got back on my beloved 86. The red paint had died and it was time to sand it to bare medal and start fresh with a flat black prime job before I apply some fresh Viper Red to it in a few months. I had a old worn 91 HO engine in it to get around while I stripped and primed it.

But before that engine goes together, I just freshened up that 91 HO shortblock with a SD HO cam retarded 2 degrees topped off with some GT40 heads I ported myself with 1.90x1.60 Manley valves, screw in studs and LS beehive valvesprings. I'm trying for a GT40(Exploder) intake shootout with Tmoss and BigDogs porting to put their portwork to the test with dyno and track results compared to a stock Exploder intake. Hopefully tomorrow I get the engine installed with a stock Exploder GT40 intake to baseline with.

Just goes to show how these projects ain't ever done. These ol cars are years in the making, and once you decide to do some really cool serious stuff, like with the 352 and Hogan intake, it will require years of planning sometimes. It was a really enjoyable read, and looking forward to your progress on the GT40 stuff and the big 352 plan.

Thanks, this car has been a huge part of my life! So many memories and moments of pure enjoyment were created in this Mustang. My big brother played a huge part thru the years of me owning and racing this car, I lost him to pancreatic cancer in 2016 at the age of 48, the same age I'm about to be. There isn't a day goes by I don't think of him and all the crazy times we had driving this ol mustang! The day before he passed away, even though he was extremely weak and couldn't walk, I carried him in my arms and put him in the ol girl. We just rode around for hours enjoying the last few moments we knew we were going to have together.

Quick story on where the name LilRed86 comes from...lol.

It started back in the late 90's, when the Canfield headed 306/NX combo was stomping and embarrassing A LOT of big block Chevys boys in my area. The windows were limo tinted so no one really knew who was the owner or driver of the car. So usually after a night of racing I would go into the city for some gas and grub. As soon as someone recognized the car and I popped out of the drivers door, it never failed what question they would ask......."Hey.....you the owner of that Lil Red 86 Mustang?" Or " You the owner of that Lil Red 86 coupe?" So the nickname kinda stuck....lol.

Had this personalized plate on it for at least 10yrs. It actually comes from a Ford ad campaign that was in the mustang magazines. On the plate of a black foxbody GT was wrote...I DARE YOU. I'll try to find that magazine ad...

Great story. The newest planned iteration sounds awesome.

I'm a big fan of the '86 4eye too. Although not a drag racer, I do autocross and open track mine. A pic.

Damn...those fender flares are nice!! Beautiful 4 eye ragtop!! I totally love a great handing foxbody. A good friend of mine still owns his first car he got in 91, a 89 Saleen. I remember driving it and how great it hugged the road. Mine will be heading to paint by the fall to get sprayed in Viper Red.

What a trip down memory lane. Sorry about your brother.

Jamex suspension springs...dang...Havent heard that name in years.

Nice port work on the GT40 heads, where did you get your porting inspiration from?
Love the simple combos.

Thank you, yea my brother and I were real close. Miss him dearly. Oh yea...the memories!! Lol...a lot of people have NEVER heard of Jamex springs, they still on the car now!
I guess my porting inspiration comes naturally because I've been very artistic since I was 5-6yrs old. Love to draw and paint, hence I'm a professional painter by trade. But I did mechanic work also for a living, was a Ford tech for awhile.

But I will give a ton of credit to my machinist that I use today on all my builds. His name is Clay Ewing (Ewing's Machine Shop, Rockingham NC) The man is a pure perfectionist, so in 2001 he brought me in as an apprentice porter so I could learn about airflow and what it takes to make an internal combustion engine as efficient as possible to make HP!
