Was there something different in the pre-84 cars that would not allow this to work in them?

83' and earlier didn't have a clutch safety switch or NSS. 79' completely different pedal assembly.

Somewhere along the years between 1980- 81 the pedal assembly changed to clutch cable quadrant style for clutch pedal engagement. Thought this was more like 1982-83' models but recent parts yard adventures have proved me wrong.
