3 Core Radiator Install
By Billy Edwards

This simple procedure will greatly enhance your 87 - 93 5 speed Mustang's cooling abilities under racing conditions. The three-core unit actually has about twice the thickness of the stock two-core radiator. The only required parts for this modification are the new radiator, which can be found at most auto parts stores for about $150, and replacement coolant. Only simple hand tools are needed.

Procedure:
Allow engine to cool completely, then drain the coolant from radiator using the stopcock located on the lower passenger's side of the radiator, near the carbon canister. Remove the radiator cap then disconnect the upper and lower radiator hoses. Using a 7/16" Box wrench remove the four bolts that secure the fan to the water pump. Then remove the serpentine belt, marking the direction of rotation.

Next, remove the two screws that mount the fan shroud on the radiator and disconnect the overflow hose from the filler neck. Remove the fan shroud and fan together. Now all that is left is to remove the two clamps that hold the top of the radiator. Carefully lift the radiator out of the rubber pads that cushion it at the bottom. Sometimes these pads will want to stick to the radiator. Remove the rubber pads inside the upper clamps, turn them around, and press them back into the clamps. Some additional trimming with a razor blade may be required to fit the larger radiator into the clamps.

Next, lower the new radiator back into the rubber mounts on the radiator support and reinstall the top clamps. Reinstall hoses, fan, and fan shroud in the same way that they were positioned with the older radiator, paying careful attention to tighten the fan to water pump bolts and to install the serpentine belt with the same rotation. Refill coolant and check periodically as air sometimes takes a while to bleed out.

Notes:

  1. The fan shroud will move significantly closer to the serpentine belt, but there should be no clearance problems.
  2. The coolant mix can have a significant effect on engine cooling. A higher water content allows more heat absorption. Most climates require only about 1/3 antifreeze.
  3. A lower temperature thermostat and Redline Water Wetter may also enhance the cooling system.
  4. Vehicles with automatic transmissions may also use the radiator as a transmission fluid cooler. Make sure to get the proper part for your car.
