PPI's Cobra "R" Model Power Steering Cooler Installation

After numerous bouts with boiling power steering fluid on Project Mongoose, we decided to install the 1993 and 1995 Cobra "R" model's auxiliary power steering cooler provided to us by Performance Parts, Inc. PPI is the leader in 1993-1996 Cobra factory parts and accessories in addition to numerous other late model goodies.

Here's how it's done:
STUFF
To complete this installation you'll need:
  • Automatic Transmission Fluid (We used cheap stuff to flush out the system and Mobil 1 Synthetic for the final fill)
  • 1 1/2" hose clamps
  • High pressure hoses (not fuel lines)
STEP
#1:
Remove the low pressure power steering hoses that attach the power steering pump to the old cooler and the old cooler to the steering rack. The reason that we did this is because with the mileage that Project Mongoose had racked up, it was advisable to replace the hoses rather than splice new hosing to the old.
STEP
#2:
Next, remove the stock Mustang's power steering cooler which is merely a steel tube!
STEP
#3:
Attach the new power steering hosing and clamps to the rack and pump and leave plenty of extra slack to find an area for the "R" cooler with the best air flow exposure. The "factory" location for this cooler is in the driver's side fog light hole on both the 1993 and 1995 "R" model. The cooler is attached to an application specific bracket (also available from PPI) that places the cooler right in the oncoming air stream. The only problem is that the stock GT's or Cobra's fog lights must be eliminated in this mode. We wanted to keep the stock fog lights intact.
STEP
#4:
We elected to place the cooler off to the driver's side behind the fog light and hung it on existing facia mounting studs. No drilling or modifications were required because the cooler has a handy integral mounting bracket.
STEP
#5:
Attach the new hoses after trimming.
STEP
#6:
Fill the power steering pump with fresh fluid. Our final product looks like this.

This mod produced a noticeable improvement in steering feel during continuous high RPM track and street usage. It will also help to extend the power steering fluid life as well as related components merely by doing this simple 30 minute installation!
