Have your catch pan ready and drain the rear. Smells good doesn't it? |
|
| 2 |
Remove the rear differential cover. |
 |
| 3 |
Remove the carrier pin. |
|

Pull the C clips out of the rear axles, a strong magnet or needle nose vice grips will help. |

Now is a good time to replace your rear axle bearings. |
 |
| 6 |
Disconnect the hard line from the rear drums. |
|
| 7 |
Disconnect the parking brake lines from the yoke above the drive shaft.
(The person who removed the Brake booster can now start removing the parking brake handle, see section below) |

Unbolt the rear drums and remove as one piece.

The parking brake lines are held in by expanding clips. You can remove the parking brake lines by either cutting the expanding clips, using a tie wrap to compress them and then pull them through, or some have used a 12mm socket to compress them and push them through the mounting holes. |
|
| 10 |
Remove all the hard lines from the rear axle. |
|
| 11 |
Remove the soft line between the hard line and the pumpkin. |
|
| 12 |
Replace all hardware with the pieces included in the kit and torque to spec. |
|
| 13 |
Install the mounting plates to the rear axles and torque to spec.
For a little extra neatness you might want to paint these brackets black with a high temperature paint just to keep them from rusting. Unfortunately I should have done this but forgot. |
|
| 14 |
Install the new axles. |
 |
| 15 |
Reinstall C Clips. |
|
| 16 |
Reinstall the carrier pin. |
|
| 17 |
Scrape off all the old silicone from the differential housing and the differential cover. |
|
| 18 |
Spread a generous bead of silicone around the lip of the differential cover. |
|
| 19 |
Replace differential cover and torque to spec using a "Star" pattern for your tightening order. |

The self adjusting mechanism is disengaged when the brakes are fully disengaged and the handle is pushed all the way down. When you push all the way down the ratchet is disengaged from the teeth by a tab at the top of the assembly. By welding the ratchet to the teeth the handle will not go down all the way. Thus you may also want to cut off the self adjusting tab on the ratchet.
